
Before establishing and becoming an artistic director of Asylon Theatre -Marta Mari (real name Szypczyńska) began her journey in the arts in Poland during her high school years. She then went to study theatre arts at a prestigious school of arts-Columbia College Chicago from which she graduated with BA in Theatre Directing.
Marta is committed to creating work that is thought-provoking, imaginative, and inspirational. An intuitive and enabling director she highly values multicultural and international collaborations.Her methods of working have been particularly influenced by Sanford Meisner, Anne Bogart and Tadeusz Kantor.
Some of her directing credits include: Out at Sea at The Chopin Theatre in Chicago, The Adding Machine and Wild Honey-both at Columbia Studio, and The Enchanted Night. Her Scottish productions include: Tango at The Ramshorn Theatre in Glasgow and Third Breast for Asylon Theatre performed at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2009. Her short play One Lie was presented at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh as part of Ten in November 2009.
Convinced that engagement in arts can transform and enrich people’s lives she decided to also get involved into organizational aspects of creating arts by completing a course of study at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh with MA degree in Arts and Cultural Management.
In December 2008 she co-produced and directed Do You Hear What I Hear-a cross-cultural winter holiday concert in Edinburgh. Traditional songs and carols were performed in original languages, in new musical arrangements with a theatrical touch.
In spring 2009 she co-produced a charitable V-Day Event to raise money and awareness of violence against women and girls. For that purpose she directed a staged reading of A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer at GRV in Edinburgh.
She has participated and led various theatre and writing workshops in Poland, USA and Scotland. She also regularly writes for Polki w Świecie magazine.
Privately, married to Krzysztof Szypczynski; daughters Amelia and Marysia; 3 lovely cats: Ramza, Nubi and Sari.
